Collecting Seeds for the Forests of the Future

The Azuero Eco Foundation always strives to innovate its programs and management. We currently have an on-site plant nursery in the garden of our office of native species and fruit trees to meet our reforestation needs. Last year, we also introduced an initiative to strengthen some of the community plant nurseries in the region, and we want to motivate different community members to replicate our efforts to make the Azuero region sustainable and communities more resilient to the effects of climate change.

When embarking on a new path, we face new challenges, great difficulties and opportunities, but we can never walk alone - we must always have people by our side who help us to take and improve every step we take. On December 17, 2019, we decided to launch a new initiative taking into consideration our communities, volunteers, people who believe that there can be a better future in Azuero, people who, like us, want to contribute to the conservation of our forests, young people who aim to contribute in a sustainable manner to creating a balance for the conservation of our fauna and flora.

Our new goal is to create a network of seed collectors where we aim to obtain seeds of native species in every community or corner of our beautiful Azuero. We managed to collect a considerable amount of seedlings which will be used for our reforestation projects in the future. For us as a Foundation, a successful communication with members of our communities is an important issue, so we have decided to embark on a new path where we all participate equally, thereby creating an empowered team with a desire to save our forests, which represent entities of change for our region. The communities of Azuero can be the launching point and example for other communities committed to the environment in other regions of Panama, and thus achieve wider change. Let's act locally, to achieve a GLOBAL change!

If you are interested in being part of our Seed Collectors Network, please write to us at roxana@proecoazuero.org or call us at 995-2995. We are looking forward to your contributions!
