Talk Descriptions:

  • Why Reforest? Reforestation Options for your Land: AEP staff members Guillermo Duran and Leo Mena will take us on a tour of the options for reforestation, including habitat restoration, mixed native species plantations, and silvopastoral systems, depending on landowner goals. They will explore best species for the beginning stages of reforestation, and announce the launch of a new Azuero-specific AEP tool, the Azuero Tree Database, that will help landowners find the best tree species for their goals and needs for their property.
  • Economic Benefits of Reforestation: Emilio Mariscal, University of Panama professor and forest engineer with extensive experience on the Azuero peninsula, will discuss how to improve the value of your land through reforestation, both for monetary and ecosystem service gains.
  • Registering your Reforestation Project to Protect Your Rights: If I plant trees, how will I know that I will be able to cut them down in the future? ANAM officials, Nora Vanessa Zambrano and Fernando Domínguez, are available to answer this question and explain the legal process of registering your forest plantation with ANAM to ensure that your rights are protected. In this presentation, we will learn about the tax benefits and privileges that come with registering a reforestation project.
  • Silvopastoral: Cattle +Trees = Extra Value:  Fernando Uribe, from Colombia’s CIPAV Foundation, will describe how you can increase the income and productivity of degraded farmland in Azuero through deploying a mix of strategies that combine restorative plant species with cattle production.
  • A Successful Model: The 10 Year Evolution of a Multifunctional Finca: Vernon Scholey, Director of the Achotines Laboratory and Forest, and partner in the IDB Forestal Project, describes his journey to reforest parts of his land in different experimental styles (mixed species plantation, silvopastoral system, riparian forest area) and how sustainable land management can increase landowner satisfaction.
